Very exciting day on Monday, September 14! The second 53-foot trailer arrived from Casavant with some very big pipes and special pipes!
Included in this delivery were the 32′ Contra Bombarde pipes for the Gallery pedal division. You may remember from a previous post that these are 1931 Casavant pipes built for the Juilliard School’s concert hall at its old uptown location. After Juilliard moved to Lincoln Center, the organ was parceled out and these pipes ended up at Calvary Church on Park Avenue South – moved there by the organist Calvin Hampton. We are thrilled to have these HUGE pipes be part of the Grace organ – they will be real floor shakers! (The wrapped square packages marked “Bomb 32” are the wooden and metal “feet” for these ginormous pipes. The actual reed that vibrates is located there.
Other pipes that arrived were the new 16′ Trombone for the Gallery Great (there will be an 8′ extension and a new 4′ Clarion as well.)
And finally the “big five” 16′ Double Open Diapason pipes for the Chancel pedal were brought in. These pipes are HUGE! They are mitered (bent to fit) and have false tops that you see at the top of the case.
I’m still working with WordPress to learn how to add videos without distortion! In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this one video of some of these big arrivals! The next truck – date TBD – will have the remainder of the organ: the chancel console, the refinished/repainted Chancel facade pipes, and the remainder of the pipes for the organ.
